Hiring/Budgeted Salary or Hourly Range: The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $25.75 - $26.86/hr.

Full Salary Range: $25.75-$30.72/hr. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University.

Brief Summary of Job Duties

Assists PI and lab staff with riparian restoration and research projects. Restoration responsibilities focus primarily on production (collection, growth, and maintenance) of native plants to be installed at restoration sites in Ventura County. The incumbent will also be responsible for maintaining the growing facility, including irrigation, benches, and shade structures, and keeping facilities clean to prevent weeds and pathogens from infecting potted plants. The employee will also assist with removing invasive plants (herbicide use and weeding), plant installation, site maintenance, biological data collection and management, and assisting with report preparation

Required Qualifications
1 year of experience in a similar position or if the degree is outside of these fields, three years of experience in a similar position is required

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in ecology, environmental sciences, or related field.

Special Conditions of Employment

Driver’s License (U08): Must maintain valid CA DL, a clean DMV record and enrollment in DMV Pull-Notice Program

Job Functions/Percentage of Time/Duties

  • 30% Native plant propagation and facilities maintenance - Collect, grow, and maintain native plants for restoration projects using developed methodologies. Incumbent will also use scientific information to test new techniques and approaches to grow plant species with specialized germination requirements. Maintain on-campus greenhouse space and nursery, including shade structures, benches, and irrigation systems, and keep facilities clean to prevent weeds and pathogens from infecting potted plants.
  • 10% Supervision of undergraduate employees - Supervise and coordinate the work of undergraduate employees to facilitate plant propagation, greenhouse maintenance, and research projects focused on plant-insect interactions.
  • 40% Restoration assistance - Assist with riparian restoration project including removal of invasive plants (hand weeding and herbicide use), planting, site clean-up, and biological monitoring.
  • 10% Biological monitoring and data management - Collect and manage data from restoration monitoring, including inputting data into excel, cataloging field data sheets, and using online data storage system.
  • 10% Report writing - Prepare monthly and quarterly progress reports for grant agencies. Assist with the preparation of annual monitoring reports.
