POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Assistant Specialist will work under the supervision of Dr. Daniel Sumner in the department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of California, Davis. The Assistant Specialist will collaborate on research projects focused on economics of legal cannabis markets in California with emphasis on cultivation, environment and supply chain issues. Contribute to technical data analysis and economic modeling, and review and summarize professional literature.

The Assistant Specialist will also work with the PIs to develop an individual professional competence and activity plan that will include providing documented research-based information in response to requests from other research teams and gather information for other research teams doing related work. They will also be responsible for reviewing research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications related to economics of cannabis.

The Assistant Specialist will work in contribute to committees within Agricultural and Resource Economics, CAES, UC Davis, and the University of California as appropriate for the position. And will be responsible for developing professional relationships with companies and industry organizations, government agencies, and other groups on issues related to cannabis economics.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DESIGNATED AREAS OF EXPERTISE

I. RESEARCH IN SPECIALIZED AREAS (90% EFFORT)
A. Collaborate with research team on economics of legal cannabis markets in California with emphasis on cultivation, environment and supply chain issues. Contribute to technical data analysis and economic modeling review and summarize professional literature. Evaluation of performance in research activities:
1. Research publications that acknowledge the Specialist's significant and meaningful contribution to the research effort.
2. Occasional publications on which the Specialist is a co-author with more senior members of the team.
3. Occasional presentations and informal dissemination of information through on-line publications and posting of information related to and drawing on the Specialist's research accomplishments.
4. Other evidence of recognized expertise, including presentation of research at academic if industry meetings, invitations to review proposals or journal articles, invitations to participate in research projects, and/or service on advisory panels.

II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (5% EFFORT)

A. Provide documented research-based information in response to requests from other research teams and gather information for other research teams doing related work.

B. Review research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications related to
economics of cannabis.

III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5% EFFORT)

A. Develop professional relationships with companies and industry organizations, government agencies, and other groups on issues related to cannabis economics.

B. Contribute to committees within Agricultural and Resource Economics, CAES, UC Davis, and the University of California as appropriate for the position.

QUALIFICATIONS

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Appointees to the Assistant rank should possess a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or five years of experience demonstrating expertise in economics, agricultural economics, or a closely related discipline.

Preferred qualifications
  • Evidence of publications for technical audiences such as peer reviewed journal articles
  • Experience presenting at academic conferences
  • Experience developing professional relationships with companies and industry organizations, government agencies, and other groups on issues related to cannabis economics
