This position falls under the classification Park Ranger 3.

What you will do:
As a Park Ranger for
Collier Memorial State Park
, you will have the opportunity to independently coordinate park projects, activities, and programs, using your technical expertise and specialized park skills (e.g.: resource interpretation, cultural and natural resource restoration, complex utility operations or maintenance programs, park rule enforcement, visitor services, etc.) across management unit boundaries. You will also mentor permanent and seasonal employees throughout the park region in specialized skills such as the maintenance and operations of OPRD programs and properties.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Five years of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping)
  • OR a Bachelor's degree in Park and Recreation Administration, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Studies or a related field and 2 years of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping);
  • OR an Associate's degree in Park and Recreation Administration or Natural Resource Management or Environmental Studies and 3.5 years of visitor services experience (e.g., rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping).
Special Requirements:
  • To be hired, you must have a criminal records and driving records check that meets OPRD Criteria at the time of hire, and throughout employment.
  • You must have a valid driver’s license at the time of hire and throughout employment.
  • Must wear OPRD supplied uniform and comply with appearance code while on duty.
  • Must comply with and adhere to applicable federal, state, local, and agency rules, laws, standards, procedures, and policies.
  • Obtain and maintain one or more of the following after appointment:
    • First Aid/CPR Certification
    • Enforcement Officer Status
    • Pesticide applicator license
What we are looking for (Desired Attributes):
The following are skills that we have identified as key to success in this Park Ranger role at OPRD. These are the attributes we are looking for in our top candidate. If you have these skills, please let us know in your application.
  • Skill and knowledge of complex park resources and facility operations, maintenance, construction, plumbing, and resource interpretation while working for a State, Federal, County or City Park System in an overnight camping facility.
  • Skill in planning and organizing special events, equipment, materials, and staff to accomplish work, evaluating the effectiveness of plans and activities, and recommending changes for improvement.
  • Skill in teaching employees how to diagnose maintenance and operation problems, breakdowns and disruptions, and how to initiate and carry out solutions to include carpentry, masonry, plumbing and facility maintenance, along with campground registration and cash handling procedures.
  • Skill in practices relating to conservation, preservation and restoration, rehabilitation of archaeological, cultural or historic sites or structures.
  • Skill in evaluating situations, inspecting safety hazards, explaining and applying rules and guidelines, determining and carrying out appropriate course of action to achieve desired results.
  • Skill in park rule enforcement to include resolving customer complaints related to overnight camping, park rule interpretation and issuing written warnings or citations while maintaining composure during emergency or emotionally charged situations.
  • Skill in administering contractual agreements to ensure that products and services are delivered as specified.
  • Skill in leading, coaching, mentoring, assigning work, and monitoring permanent, seasonal and volunteer employees.
  • Skill in working with Friends Groups.
  • Skill working with and applying pesticides and herbicides.
