Job Summary


NVLAP accredited and NIST recognized Metrology laboratory seeks to add another metrologist to our team. Current customer workload includes mass (echelons I, II, and III) and volume (transfer and gravimetric) calibrations. Weights and Measures serves organizations that complete and regulate Commerce across Minnesota, the Midwest, and across North America. Joining our Metrology team will allow you to serve your neighbors and be part of ensuring a fair and competitive marketplace every day.

A new Metrologist will gain proficiency in mass and volume calibration procedures via on-the-job training and successful completion of NIST OWM courses. Additional projects include working with the Metrology team to foster, continual improvement to the team, the quality management system, customer service, continue compliance with NIST OWM and NVLAP requirements, and possible expansions of the laboratory scope.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Chemistry, Physics, Geology, Biology, Engineering, Metrology, or similar field AND 2 years metrology experience in mass or volume calibrations.

OR

Master's Degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Chemistry, Physics, Geology, Biology, Engineering, Metrology, or similar field AND 1 year metrology experience in mass or volume calibrations.

OR

An equivalent combination of education and/or experience (as defined above)

Applicants who meet the above education/experience requirements must also meet the following to be considered further:

  • Completion of NIST Office of Weights & Measures (OWM) "Fundamentals of Metrology" course or a passing score (70%) on the pre-requisite math test for that course prior to the end of the probationary period. Math abilities will be assessed during the interview process with a math test.
  • Physical abilities (assessed via a fit-for-duty assessment) sufficient to lift 30 kg (67lbs) and carefully place it on a balance and repeatedly climb a 15-foot staircase.
  • Ability to follow standard operating, administrative, and laboratory procedures.
  • Good communication skills (oral and written)
  • Work effectively in a team or on individual projects.

Preferred Qualifications

At least 5 years' experience in Weights and Measures.

Successful completion of NIST OWM Course FoM, Mass, Volume, and/or Advanced Mass.

Successful completion of NIST LAP Problems associated with above listed courses.

Previous experience with VBA, Macros, or any other programming languages.

Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to walk or stand on hard surfaces for long periods of time. Lifting and carrying heavy objects such as measurement equipment, heavy tools and banker style file boxes is required.
